EGG TEMPERA / Religious Icons




The tools I use are all 100% natural and come
from the earth. Clay on wood is the pallet,
minerals from the earth mixed with the yolk of
an egg provide the colors, and the gold for
the halo is gold leaf.After each icon is
completed, the surface is covered with Olifa,
a natural linseed oil. It is applied by hand and
serves to protect the icon and is also a sign
of anointing.

After being commissioned to paint the icon, Christ Pantocrator, I shifted my focus to include the study of icons and iconology. Self-taught, I continue to pursue the ancient crafts of egg-tempera and gilding in my quest to preserve and follow the historical traditions.

SIMPLY MARY IS ONE OF MY OWN DESIGNS. AFTER STUDYING THE ANCIENT MASTERS, I FELT INSPIRED TO CREATE A SOFTER VERSION OF MARY AND THEREBY NAMED HER, SIMPLY MARY.
